About Us: Opened in 2001, Serco manage HMP Dovegate on a 25 year contract as a category B prison. We care for over 1060 male adult prisoners over the age of 21 all serving a range of sentences including trial, remand, awaiting sentence and convicted men serving over four years to life. Dovegate, in Staffordshire, provides education - literacy, numeracy, IT and vocational skills - healthcare, industrial work opportunities, drug and alcohol counselling, accredited and non-accredited offender behaviour courses aimed at reducing criminogenic risk and thereby aiding release and resettlement of offenders. The prison also includes a separate 200-bed Therapeutic Community for repeat serious offenders. The unit, the only privately-run one in the UK and the only purpose-built therapeutic facility, offers its residents daily group therapy, which lasts between 18 months and 24 months. Essential Requirements: To be a Chartered Psychologist (BPS) and Registered Psychologist (HCPC). The position requires knowledge of Forensic Psychological & Democratic Therapeutic Community theories, practices and procedures employed within a custodial setting. The position requires conducting and overseeing the psychological and emotional assessment for intervention and rehabilitative therapeutic approaches which best serve the needs of residents, within the multidisciplinary team and complying with institutional policies and procedures. Skills Needed: To have experience working in a therapeutic environment and to be able to maintain the safety and integrity of that environment. This is to include being confident in describing the Therapeutic Community (TC) model and be sufficiently knowledgeable of TC principles to train other staff in that area. To have experience and a working knowledge of mental health; to have at least knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983) and the subsequent amendments, and preferably a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act (1983) and mental health issues. To have experience and a working knowledge of personality disorders; assessment and management of personality disorders in a forensic setting. To formulate assessment procedures and undertake clinical assessment of the residents in a multidisciplinary environment, maintaining the psychological and emotional wellbeing of the residents; making decisions on selections and de-selections from the TC Assessment Unit, reviewing application criteria and recommending treatment interventions and management of challenging behaviours. To possess a proven record of successful leadership in relation to setting team objectives; with organisational effectiveness (time management, prioritising competing workloads, adhering to task deadlines). To possess excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate information regarding treatment progress and activities to other relevant professionals, community agencies and residents. To act with discretion and sensitivity regarding the discussion of diagnosis, treatment and progress with relevant professionals, outside agencies and residents. To possess motivational skills to collaborate with residents to engage with assessment and intervention and encourage them to work through their assessment to progress into therapy. To demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships with multidisciplinary staff. To be a skilled clinical supervisor maintaining ethical boundaries. To have competent computer skills to operate Windows applications including: word processing, databases and email.
